Project TAR (Tobacco Access Reduction)
Project TAR utilizes the Minnesota Smoking Prevention Program (MSPP) curriculum which is designed for students in grades 4th thru 8th (ages 10-15). The goals of this research-based program are to prevent students from beginning to use tobacco; to help students stop using tobacco if they have experimented with it; and to help students influence friends and family members not to use tobacco.
All Stars
All Stars is a research-based program for students in grades 4th thru 8th (ages 10-15). This program is designed to increase character development and is structured around nine commitments related to ideals, citizenship, and avoidance of high-risk behaviors.
Project ALERT
Project ALERT is an 11-session nationally recognized model program that is designed to reduce substance abuse, specifically alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and inhalant use, among middle-school age youth. Most effective for students in grades 5th thru 8th (ages 11-15).
JumpStart
JumpStart is an interactive, research-based prevention program for middle-school aged youth. It is most effective for students in grades 6th thru 8th (ages 11-14). It is a spin off of the highly effective Peer POWER program. JumpStart is based on the Health Belief Model with each of the six key factors of the model incorporated into six, 50-minute sessions. The program provides young people with the information and skill development needed to make wise and healthy decisions through the use of highly-interactive experiential techniques that make lessons engaging and fun for participants. The six JumpStart lessons address topics such as stress and emotional health, bullying, drugs and alcohol, peer pressure and decision making, sexual health, relationships, and communication. The goal is that young people increase their ability to make positive decisions in regards to behaviors that are critical to their social-emotional development.
Strengthening Families Program (SFP)
SFP is a science-based family skills training program designed to increase resilience and reduce risk factors for behavioral, emotional, academic, and social problems. SFP builds on protective factors by improving family relationships, parenting skills, and improving social and life skills for youth.
Celebrate Families Program (CFP)
CFP is an 8-week parent and child education program. CFP is designed for early elementary students and their parents/caregivers to: connect, build skills and positive attitudes, and celebrate family strengths.
Peer POWER
The Peer POWER Program is an interactive, evidence based prevention program. Peer POWER is facilitated by highly trained youth peer educators and has the following 4 unique curricula: Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs, Violence Prevention, Healthy Choices and Dive Into Diversity. Each curriculum was developed based on the Health Belief Model and is evaluated extensively by an evaluation team from Western Michigan University.
Kalamazoo County Substance Abuse Task Force
The Kalamazoo County Substance Abuse Task Force is a dedicated group of community members that develop strategies, programs, and practices that address alcohol and substance abuse issues in our community. This effort involves reducing access to substances, preventing high risk behaviors, promoting community awareness, connecting community resources and providing education.
